What Is BAWAG?
Dr. Karl Renner, the Chancellor of Austria, started BAWAG in 1922 as the Arbeiterbank (Austrian Worker’s Bank), not so much to help ordinary people get good credit terms as to keep them from going to more capitalist institutions. The bank is owned by socialist trade unions and the Großeinkaufsgesellschaft für österreichische Konsumvereine, which is a company that buys things for Austrian consumer associations. But because BAWAG was close to the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPO) and labour unions, the Austro-fascist government of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuß closed it down in 1934. It went back to work in 1947, after World War II was over.
