Window glass will generate electricity
Imagine windows, which not only provide an overview and lighting facilities, but also use sunlight to generate electricity. Engineers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new way to use solar energy, which may allow window glass to produce electricity from sunlight.
Instead of placing photocells on surfaces large area in the new draft proposes to establish a special photocells on edges of the glass, collecting sunlight throughout its surface. It is proposed to manufacture glass of several layers of material, works on the principle of organic diodes. Each layer of material with light passing through it absorbs a certain color of light spectrum.
The main advantage glasses are cheap and easy to manufacture. Moreover, such a method would allow deployment of photovoltaic, through a more bright light on the edges of the sheet glass, to increase the number obtained in this manner electricity and reduce the size of the system as a whole.
All the work to develop a new way of obtaining electricity has been implemented with the support of the U.S. National Science Foundation. The simplicity of manufacturing data systems would allow, according to developers, to begin their widespread introduction in the next 3 - x years.
